Larry “Spiderman” McBride showed no signs of “taking it easy” on his first official run of 2012.
The Spiderman soared to the No. 1 qualifying position on Friday, April 13th at the Manufacturers Cup from South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta, Ga. with a 5.86 at 241 mph. It was one of the ten quickest runs of McBride’s career and, surprisingly, it was far from flawless.
“It dropped the No. 1 and No. 3 cylinders 3.9 seconds into the run. This easily could have a been .70,” said McBride, who holds the world record at 5.79. “We have a lot to look forward to this weekend.”
McBride’s 5.86 came with a 1.03 60-foot time and 3.83 at 200.97 half-tack performance. At last year’s event McBride’s three best runs were 5.81, 5.85 and 5.98.
The 5.86 lifted the team’s spirits after it destroyed a motor earlier this morning in testing.
So far over 300 motorcycle are entered in the event and there are nine entries in Top Fuel. McBride is followed by Harley racers, No. 2 qualifier Tak Shigematsu, 6.26, and No. 3 qualifier Tommy Grimes, 6.29.
