If the electric age of motorsports wasn’t already here, experienced multi-discipline racer Steve Huff emphatically ushered it in with the first 200 mph electric dragster run at Tucson Dragway, Ariz., just after midnight, Thursday May 14.
Huff’s 7.52 at 201.07 mph comes after years of arduous and expensive research, development, trial and error.
“This means the world,” Huff said. “For everyone who every taught me to never give up, thank you.”
Huff beat who many consider the greatest drag racer of all-time, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits to the sought- after 200 mph milestone, following Garlits’ reign as the electric dragster speed king at 189 mph.
Prior to the test session, Huff’s best speed was 181 mph. With assistance from electronic experts AEM, Huff changed the configuration his vehicle over the off season, doubling the power output and moving away from a clutch / jack shaft shaft / belt driven combination to a chain driven set up.
The test session got off to an inauspicious start as fault codes and gremlins surfaced in the new combination that had to be worked out. After 330 and eighth miles passes and several hours tuning the car on laptops, Huff went for his first full quarter mile pass but had to lift at at around 1,100 feet when he got out of shape. Huff’s speed on the pass was a personal best of 185 mph and a new world record for his AC current configuration.
Encouraged by the progress the team added 10% more power and a pound and three-quarters of air to each slick for one final run just after midnight. Hoping for anything fast enough to surpass Garlits’ 189 mph, Huff stunned all in attendance, including himself with a beautiful and historic run at 201 mph.
Huff becomes the second quickest electric drag racer of all time, trailing only motorcycle legend Larry “Spiderman” McBride who went 201.37 eight years ago on an Orange County Choppers / Lawless industries electric drag bike.
Huff aims to take the top spot on Friday.
