On Thursday April 11th Maryland International Raceway announced the passing of Chris Miller, son of MIR owner Royce Miller and co-owner of the XDA with his brother Jason.
I spent so many hours in the tower working with Chris over the past 25 years. He was the most accurate, detail-oriented tower manager I have ever worked with.
The picture above I took about 15 years ago as Chris and his brother Jason were proudly showing off the massive amount of tech cards after a record-breaking race. With Chris at the helm, rest assured all of those tech cards were fully filled out and all of the data was accurately put into the computer system.
I never left a race at MIR without Chris giving me full results for Cycledrag. That’s incredibly rare in this day. He was a master of his job. He was a perfectionist.
Here was the typical pattern – The stress and serious demeanor would turn light hearted and laughs would be had in the tower at about 7pm on Sunday, as it was clear another successful event had been executed. Those are some of my greatest memories of Chris.
I’ll never forget the last time I saw him. We were both working hard at the Bike Fest last July and he was taking a quick break to have a smoke in the back of the tower. I could tell how hard he’d been working. I just looked at him and smiled and said “I’m getting too old for this.” He smiled back, laughed and said “me too.” I’ll take that memory with me.
Godspeed Chris and God bless the entire Miller family.
