In less than a month, the hallowed grounds of Gainesville Raceway will come to life with the incredible sights and sounds of 11,000-horsepower, 330-mph racing action when the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series opens its 2023 season on March 9-12 at the 54th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Matt Smith has his sights on a third Gatornationals victory, but he’ll have to get past Eddie Krawiec, his own wife Angie Smith, Steve Johnson and Joey Gladstone and a multitude of fierce racers.
Last season it was the ladies who dominated the event with Karen Stoffer and Angie Smith meeting up in the final. Stoffer took the win and left the event with a new national record of 6.66 – a mark that has yet to be surpassed.
Much has changed in the past year as Stoffer announced her retirement at the end of the 2022 campaign and several new riders including Gaige Herrera and Chase Van Sant have emerged.
Angie Smith kept the momentum up all season and ended on the strength of a career best No. 3 finish in the standings.
With Smith’s husband gaining factory support from Suzuki and unable to race his “Red Rocket” Buell, Angie will have her pick when it comes to the team’s quickest and fastest v-twin components.
It’s yet another reason to be excited for what should be a thrilling a Gatornationals.
Along with that comes a full slate of special events and celebration as the 72nd NHRA season kicks off in style at the legendary facility. Fans will see thrilling racing from all four professional classes as the NHRA stars look to open the season with a victory, and there’s plenty of additional entertainment to keep fans excited all weekend long.

The Top Fuel standout will host an event featuring a car show, live music and a driver autograph session from 7-8 p.m. A special championship press conference and season kick-off event follows the next day at the Hilton University of Florida in Gainesville, honoring 2022 NHRA world champs Brittany Force, Ron Capps, Erica Enders and Matt Smith, and also featuring Hart, John Force and legendary driver “Big Daddy” Don Garlits.
Garlits will be featured guest throughout weekend and six of his historic dragsters will be included in a special “Swamp Rat Alley” section inside the Hot Rod Junction, giving fans the unique chance to check out the cars that made history.
