Adding to what has been a tremendously disappointing year for motorsports fans, Cycledrag has learned Bill Bader of Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio has made the difficult decision to cancel one of the biggest independent drag races in the world, the popular Norwalk Night Under Fire, originally slated for Aug 8. 2020.
The decision comes after the legendary Ohio racetrack has been hit with crippling restrictions. As of now Summit Motorsports Park and nearby Dragway 42 can only operate with 30 vehicles. Some restrictions are expected to be lifted as the re-opening phase continues but not to the extent that Bader feels he would be able to properly host the iconic event.
Last month Bader addressed his customers with a Facebook live saying he would open and not wait for permission. The post went viral and attracted major media attention, putting Norwalk under the microscope of scrutiny of those not wanting to open races to spectators.
For drag bike fans the nixing of the NUF also marks the cancelation of the special Cycledrag Top Fuel Motorcycle freak show featuring Larry “Spiderman” McBride, Dave Vantine and many other impressive motorcycle racers. The goal was to get some of the non-NHRA teams unprecedented exposure at an event that draws more than 40,000 fans.
While terribly disspoainitng, all parties involved are hoping 2021 presents another opportunity to get the Top Fuel Motorcycles in front of the big crowd.
